4 Click memory location 1, “LFO Waveforms”
and press the Spacebar to begin playback.
In this example, LFO 1 modulates the pitch of
the oscillators.
You can use the LFOs to modulate many other
parameters, such as the pulse width of square
waves generated by oscillators 1 and 2. Pulse
width modulation adds thickness and anima-
tion to square-wave based timbres.
To hear LFO pulse width modulation:
1 Click memory location 2, “Pulse Width Mod.”
2 Press the Spacebar to begin playback.
3 During playback, watch the PW 1+2 control.
LFOs are also commonly used to modulate fil-
ters, producing a wah-wah-type effect. Filter Res-
onance and Cutoff settings greatly influence the
intensity of the effect.
To hear LFO filter modulation:
1 Click memory location 3, “LFO Filter Mod”
and press the Spacebar to begin playback.
2 During playback, watch the filter 1 and filter 2
controls, which are linked.
You can use the Key Follow control to vary LFO
rate according to MIDI note number. Playing
higher notes increases LFO speed. Playing lower
notes decreases LFO speed.
To hear how Key Follow affects LFO rate:
1 Click memory location 4, “Pan Mod Key Fol-
low” and press the Spacebar to begin playback.
2 During playback, watch the filter 1 and filter 2
controls, which are linked.
In this example, LFO 2 modulates panning of a
stereo patch. Panning speed increases with
higher notes and decreases with lower notes.
Try modulating other parameters with the LFOs.
Experiment with different waveshapes for some
surprising effects.
Synchronizing LFO Clock to MIDI
Beat Clock
You can synchronize the clock of the LFOs, Ar-
peggiator, and Delay to MIDI Beat Clock for
rhythmic consistency with other MIDI Beat-
based elements in a session.
If multiple Virus Indigo plug-ins share the same
DSP, MIDI Beat Clock must be routed to the first
instance of the plug-in. The other instances will
then also use the MIDI Beat Clock. Once MIDI
Beat Clock has been enabled, Virus Indigo will
automatically turn off its internal tempo gener-
ator.
You can route LFO modulation to virtually
any Virus Indigo parameter using the Mod-
Matrix page.
You can use MIDI Beat Clock tempos rang-
ing from 63–190 with Virus Indigo. Tem-
pos outside this range will cause timing er-
rors.
